The Anaconda Plan.

After the Confederate's fired on Fort Sumter.  And the Civil war was officially on the Union had to come up with a plan for defeating the Confederates. General-in-Chief Winfield Scot came up with the Anaconda Plan, the Plan emphasized the Blockade of Southern ports. In April 1861 the US was hardly in shape to fight a Sea and ground War. Ship Building had to be rushed in order to get ships in place for the blockade. I read that the regular Army had  no more than 2600 active duty Soldiers. So President Lincoln was caught between a rock and a hard place. The South had there Problems. For one There geography was hard to defend. The Mississippi river ran through the South and poured into the Gulf of Mexico . General Scot knew that if the Union Control the east cost and the Mississippi river they could win the War. The South had the best Generals, but the North had Factories and could reproduce , goods faster. Besides all Slave States did not declare secession. Four Slave States, Delaware, Kentucky, Maryland, and Missouri did not leave the Union. Also in June 1861 the western part of Virginia  refused to leave the Union, and the State of West Virginia was born. This would be a very confusing war.

Men from every State in the Union, except South Carolina fought on the side of the Union. This war would pit Brother against Brother. Father against Son. And Families  against Families.

Free Blacks ran to fight for the Union, Slaves abandon the Plantations and flock to Union lines. At the beginning of the War the Union Generals would send the Slaves back to the Plantations.

However later Union Generals realized by letting the Slaves through there lines that they were hurting the South by taking there labor.

Free Blacks and Slaves fought and served the Union Army on behalf of there Freedom There is one other thing I must say the North and the South Fought this war for two different reasons.

The North wanted to save the Union. The South wanted to preserve, and expand Slavery.
