The 1860 U.S Presidential Election.

I started this Blog in February 2010 over frustration of how little the American Black People knew about there own history. I knew that you could not put 400 hundred years of history into 28 days. Well I went back to 1501 and now I am up to the 1860 U.S Presidential Election.

The Time has arrived.

The election was held November 6, 1860, and served as the key that unlocked Civil war in America. After this election things would never be the same.

The Players in the election.

The issue of Slavery and Slave expansion broke the Democratic party wide open. The party split north and South. and a party called the Constitutional Union party appeared. The Republican party came close in the 1856 election, and I am sure it was quite unsettling to White Slave owners. To Slave owners there was no living with a Republican President.

The Southern Democrats nominated  John Breckinridge. The Northern Democrats nominated  Stephen A Douglas. And The Republicans nominated Abraham Lincoln.

The Republicans were the dominant party in the North, and therefore secured a majority of the electoral votes, and that put Abraham Lincoln in the White House, with little or no support From the South.

The American Civil War was now set.

Before Lincolns Inauguration seven Southern States declared Secession and later formed the confederacy. Four additional border States join them when Lincoln call to restore Federal Property. in the South. Two States Kentucky and Missouri attempted to remain neutral.

So when  Abraham Lincoln was elected President, for the first time in American history the Slave Owner/Politician did not control the U.S Government. The Slave Owner/Politician saw the President as a threat to there way of life.

You see in November 1860 Slavery was a institution  in the United States of America.

In my next Blog we will start January 1861, America starts this year off a confused and dazed Country.
