1862

Three battles two small one large  started to change the civil war toward the union. The fall of Ft Henry, and  Ft Donaldson on the Tenn river. when the south lost these to Forts it open up the river, and the cumbland gap.  The river was open up all the way to the Mississippi State line. Later that month the city of New Orleans  fell to the union navy. In  March 1862 the union  Controled the Mississippi river from Memphis  to the Gulf.

the south controled Vicksburg mississippi overlooking the bluffs above the river. This
prove to to be quite a hard ship for the union.

The Road to freedom January 1862.

As we began the new year we find President Lincoln Pressing  General George McClellan to move his troops into the South. And US Navy Ships were starting to tighten there grip on the Southern east cost. the anaconda plan was beginning to work. Freedom was breaking out all up and down the east cost for the Black Slaves. East cost Southern farmers were burning there cotton crops in fear of them falling in the hands of Union Troops. The first real turning of the civil war in  favor of the North happen on January 30. 1862 , when England decided to stay out of the war. And not come in on the side of the South. This was  Major because the South was really looking forward to having England on there side.

Well now that the North did not have to worry about England joining the fight on the side of the South. the Union could now turn full attention toward  defeating the South. Well in the next few months  three Battles  one major one started the South on the road to defeat and to the end of Slavery.

The Confiscation act of 1861

This was a act of Congress in August 1861 permitting the US Government to Confiscate any property being used to support the Confederate cause. Since the South considered Slaves as property, They were included. After the Battle of Bull Run both sides saw the Slave as a military asset and expendable. General George McClellan was appointed Commanding General of the Army by President Lincoln.

As we move into the fall of 1861 there were no major battles. The US Navy was starting to have success on the east cost, the anaconda plan was starting to take effect. Southern farmers were burning there cotton crops because of fear that they would fall into Union hands. As winter set in military action slowed down.

As I have said the North went to war to save the Union, and the South went to war to preserve and expand Slavery. But as we draw to the end of 1861 Slavery has now become the main issue of the war. The Union did not have a set policy on what to do about Slaves coming into there lines. However when Slaves came into Union lines they felt they were free. It was up to Union Commanders as what to do with Slaves.

Some sent them back, some put them to work, and some allowed them to come through there lines. In the fall of 1861 thing were moving faster than anyone had ever seen. The war was going badly for the North, they had noway of forcing Southern States back into the Union. And if things were not bad enough, there was a risk of war with England. America was coming off track, and Slavery was now front and center.

So 1861 comes to and end with America in total confusion, and Slaves starting to see a path to freedom.

In my next Blog we move into 1862. The Black Slaves path to freedom would get a little wider.

A Chance at Freedom.

At the Battle of Bull Run we will look a little closer at the Slaves who fought in this war. Nowhere in the American History books can you find the truth about the American slaves contribution to both sides in the civil war.
In this post a Slave that fought at Bull Run will speak.
On Sunday morning July 21, 1861 a Slave by the name of John Parker and three other men open fire on Union forces, the group which was operating a cannon could not see the Union Troops, they only fired at random. Parker and his men had never experience war, and were terrified. The war was all around Parker and his men.He said he felt like he was going  to die every minute. Parker and his men depended on each other for survival because you see they were four Slaves ordered by there master to fight for the Confederates.

The Confederates had a problem in trying to force the Slaves to fight, they were in the fight physically but they were pulling for the Union  Troops to win.The only way to keep the Slaves fighting were the fear of being shot by there White officers.

Slavery did not figure into the first Battle of Bull Run, but infact the Battle loosened the bonds of Slavery. The Battle reveal that both sides saw the Slave as a Military Asset. When the North saw Black Slaves fighting at Bull Run The US Congress in August 1861 passed the Confiscation Act.   Blacks fought on both sides in the American Civil War.

When I got into  Blogging on the Civil
War I was going to write only on the Battles, but I soon found out that the Black Slave and the Freeman Soldiers was in every Battle of the American Civil War.

Read and understand American Black History.
